Must we leave? Robertos. Day’s activities.

Hello. Yesterday we enjoyed a leisurely day spent roaming around the area and eating at Robertos. We started with a late breakfast early lunch at the one near my former house in Solano Beach, banged out a visit to UCSD and the book store and then stopped at the Robertos on Carmel Valley Road for a quick 2 taco late lunch/snack. Here is round one and then round 2:

I am wearing my safety cone orange shirt so people notice me.

We then did some more shopping in lovely Del Mar/did a few trips down to the beach for pictures/generic viewing/rested and then were back out there again watching the Giants lose, again, tears, before eating another huge dinner at the Poseidon in Del Mar. I have to get those pictures off my phone later. For now, I gotta go meet shred/go to robertos and drive 500 miles so I will work on the blog more when I return to home base. We have learned a lot on the ride with many White Paper ideas floated for the Ryles Institute so stay tuned. We all think Nathan should buy a second home in Del Mar which we could all rent whenever we want. Go Nathan! Pictures!img_4249

Some of you asked to see pictures of Co Ride Leader Nathan from when he was younger so I took this baby out of his high school year book.

Such a cutie! I must go motor up the 5 I shall return!

Inconceivable/Ride Update/Q&A/Self Promotion

Hello all,

Before we get back to the ride, which was lovely, lets talk about me for a little while. As some of you know, I had my first real wipe out in June. It sucked. Falling and hitting the pavement is really just unpleasant especially when you land on your head–See attached:img_2614

img_26353

Unfortunately, this isn’t my first head injury as I have had stitches 5 times in my fragile head–here was the time I had 52 stitches after cracking my head open on the dining room coffee table due to a fall while running in the house….

img_2643

I was quite a cute kid–if I say so myself. Anyway I just bring this up because we had a huge emphasis on safety for RR3 to prevent bad stuff! Another reason I bring it up, I was out cold and had a solid concussion and due to my head injury I had this hallucination that the Presidential Nominees were Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. I still can’t shake it…is it true?/…Inconceivable! Remember, .Im an Independent and Ayn Rand supporter/Fan:

screen-shot-2016-10-08-at-8-59-02-am

Yes, I did go on a book tour with Bill Walton too. He wrote about our friendship quite a bit in his recent book so he asked me to accompany him on some of the stops in the area so we here we are at the Berkeley signing. I know I can use the same picture twice its my blog.

img_2674

Isn’t his shirt awesome.

Back to the ride! We got on the bikes at 8:15 and headed south for the more leisurely 58 mile day 2 ride. The wind was still present but less forceful. We cruised along for 20 miles then did the run thru Pendleton, which is always cool, where I regaled the riders with stories of how I was almost a Navy Seal. Only my fear of sharks/oceans/people shooting at me/heights/scary places kept me from pursuing that path. I still feel guilty at times. We stopped in Oceanside dined at the same place as last year (they were out of Avocado Toast!) and then cruised thru the prettiest town in the world, Del Mar, to the Lodge at Torrey Pines for the mandatory Bloody Mary then down the hill Past the greatest school of all  time, UCSD,  to La Jolla Shores where the fans and media gathered to celebrate our greatness! You can see how thick and aggressive the crowds can be in the first picture–our fans are the best loyal and a bit rowdy!–so, lots of pictures! The Montana guy ran with us for 24 miles.

Q&A:

Are you guys really mad at Bret and Bobby? Who? I dont know of any people who go by said names.

Do you really hate Tierney; Tierney knows Trey, Rylo Knows Tierney, Rylo Doesn’t know Trey but by the Transitive property I should so, yes.

How’s the weather? It is literally 80 degrees outside.

Any words of wisdom? Always stay with the group.

I gotta go so I will return later to give an update on how we spent our evening after arriving in the most beautiful place in the world– Del Mar.  But I will throw up one more picture of me and Shred practicing the lost art of sword fighting-he always has practical advice.

RECAP/BLATANT SELF PROMOTION/OTHER PEARLS OF WISDOM

The first day went without a hitch away from Reinecke being an hour late thus making us wait for him. There was a penalty assessed I assure you. We departed the Huntley a bit after 8 and made good time despite a pesky but persistent head wind. To assuage his guilt for being over an hour late Reinecke set a blistering pace so we made good time.  The ride along the beaches is always enjoyable and Palos Verdes is a cool town to ride through as well. Then you come to Wilmington which is the scariest place ever for somebody on a bike–or for some group of bikers. It was more treacherous than I remember it being the last 2 years so we needed to use all of our survival skills. 10 miles of chaos but then you cruise down to Huntington where we dined on Fish Tacos before banging out the last 25 miles putting the ride at exactly 75 miles. We are staying at the Laguna Cliffs which is quite lovely.  We then ubered back to Laguna for a dinner at Boardwalk which was fantastic and is run by one of the Top Chef Contestants I liked. Ok, here are some pictures. The first one is of another of our riders Bruce Reinecke. shredimg_4077img_4081img_4083
I must complete the roster for the ride–We now are fully staffed with Joe:joe-promo

and Andrew :

filling out the RR3 roster. We lost Maust and Dom to the Cold War Kids current tour. Now, The Mrs and I went to see the CWK last month at the Fox in Oakland–Maust is right there! Dom provides security for the band so he also was unable to join us but the band did dedicate this leg of the tour to RR3 so we say thanks for that!img_4097img_4111img_4122img_4133

SHOTS FIRED/CELBRITY SIGHTING/SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY.

Yes we made it down the 5 and we must say it was a very lovely day in the State Of California even if we were on the 5. We pulled into the Huntley at 2:15 prettied our selves up/rested and then started the evening at a local pub where we watched our Giants BEAT the Mets to make it to the next round of the playoffs. Good stuff. Bret blew us off, much like Bobby, so there was a solid 15 minutes of sobbing but we are starting to get thick skins. We still love him but he’s buying the next dinner and movie let me tell you. At mile 59.1 Dave and I were singing along to Mandy when all of a sudden SHABLAM something smashed into the windshield and put a big old whole on the darn thing.  At first we thought it was a rock from the repaving project they are in the middle of but we realized it was gunfire.  Yup we were under attack on the 5. Luckily I have watched every show on Afghanistan and Iraq plus I’ve read every book on that plus we love the survival Alaska shows–so, my pt–we handled the situation calmly and are safe now. The guy in the car that fired up on us looked like this:

scary

Next, as many of you know, I matriculated at Stanford in their Post Graduate Multi Disciplinary Studies Program with a focus in the Photographic arts. My pt, I’m a force to be reckoned with.  Well we are walking out of The Grill on Ocean and 20 yards away there is Larry David. The Larry David and this ride is dedicated to Seinfeld and The Highlander! He was getting in his Dark Tesla while tipping the Valet. He was dressed exactly how he does in Curb. I whipped out my camera put all my skills to good use and snapped this winner:

img_4075

Thank you! That will be going on the xmas card. I really can’t believe I didnt leap in there and get my picture taken with him. I am so angry. But, I didn’t.

We are leaving now, so i must go, but I will introduce another 2 of the riders for RR3 (Yes, it is much bigger).  We have Dave Schroeder:

shred-promo

Yes, his likeness was also in the Highlander. Dave is very excited to bang out the ride and has studied the book that I give to all first time participants:

img_4059

I gotta go, we will ride to Dana Pt over the next 6-7 hours while taking lots of pictures so be excited! Here is the back of the official RR3 Jersey.

img_4032

Happy Happy Oh My Friends.

Yes we will start with a Trey Lyric to explain the title of the first official post of Ryloride3 (which is sticking to the Seinfeld/Highlander theme!!): You decide what it contains/ How long it goes but this remains/ the only rule is it begins/ Happy happy oh my friend (s).  There you go simple as pie!

Although the ride is the same, mostly, as far as route down the coast, the participants have changed a LOT–don’t worry I will explain all of it over the next few posts.  First off the only riding member of RR2 NOT to be on RR3 is Bobby J. I know–BOOOOOO! BOOOOOOO!

!boooh

We are all deeply hurt but he has gotten a bit out of hand lately so he wont be joining us….the hurt runs deep…..When I told him he was officially out he took it quite well I think.

bobby-mad-again

I have been training VERY hard both on bike and on land and I have let my beard grow–I look good.  Here I am on a stroll through the park–Why are all the kids and mothers running away and screaming?

rylo-running

In addition to the personnel changes, I also won’t be represented by Clooney on this years Blog. He demanded a HUGE raise due to the popularity of the event and well he’s out. Instead, this year the likeness that will be representing me is…..rylo3

Yes the Highlander himself. Im quite handy with a sword.

Away from that, we have Nathan back on the bike. Here is his promo picture:

nathan-promo

Nathan is about to complete a Marathon (shortly after RR3 actually), so he’s in optimal shape for the ride.

I will do the rest of the team tomorrow!  But for now a few more  brief comments and then preparation for the drive down the 5 with none other than Dave Schroeder–aka The Shred. I made a mixture tape we can sing along with while discussing White Papers we are working on at the Ryles Institute.  I assume you are aware of the work we do.  We have changed one of the hotels due to unruly crowds of fans but only Nathan and I know the exact location which we picked very carefully while taking great precautions not to be overheard.

secret-planning

I will be back at it again after the drive tomorrow where we can go into greater depth about myself and what I have been up to etc.  Give the fans what they want.

BOSS (That would be me, The Rylo)-THE BLOG! THE BLOG!

Yes–it’s happening. The final preparations for Ryloride3–still to be officially named–are reaching their final stages.  The Executive Committee is finalizing the list of attendees so be prepared to console the poor losers who don’t make the final cut. We are also still waiting on Bobby J to commit as there was a minor rule violation by Mr. J–yes, it has to do with blood doping. He has NOT been doing NEARLY enough blood doping!  Have we taught the man nothing–Start the “Regimen” 6 months before peaking 2 weeks prior to the ride! I appreciate his efforts to have fun BUT this isn’t what we meant:

Kid-Rock-with-Jim-Beam-Cake-at-LAVO-588

He is way behind but luckily Nathan has been following the proper protocol as clearly outlined in “The Ryloride Guide for Dummies” on page 983–See Nathan gets it Bobby:

lance-armstrong-blood-doping-3

The End.

The last night while we sat by the fire pit reminiscing about our trip Bobby pulled out his guitar and sang us a new original tune he wrote on the trip (it did sound a bit like My Way…):

Bobby singing

“Yes, there were times, I’m sure you know

When I bit off more than I could chew—aka Ryloride2

But through it all there was no doubt—although I wept a lot

I ate it up and spit it out—that’s right I’m a tough guy!

I faced it all and I stood tall—although the trucks and rabid dogs in LB scared me

And did it my way—ON RYLORIDE2

And to Rylo—and Nathan too—oh lest me not forget the Support guys slash crew

To you all! I say this now—this trip was how do u say it holy cow—

It was the best, the best I say and I feel so much better—better today

Cause I came west—and I rode! Oh and did we eat-yes we at so much! Like Reinecke I am out of rhyme so goodbye until next tiiimmmmme!”

WOW.

I will let you compose yourselves. Ok, let me get to some questions before we get the final team update from the Ride Leader.

Q: What did you all learn? San Diego is gorgeous and 75 degrees all the time.

Q: How were the fans? They all were great and another special thanks.

Q: Do you have anybody to thank? We all wish to thank our loving and lovely wives who encouraged us to take on this trip and it’s on you when we go again next year. We love you SO MUCH!

Q: What are your 5 favorite Trey/TAB songs? Hi Steve. Ok, what a great question. This list changes all the time but lets go with it and yes ballads well represented:

-Let me lie, Architect, Backwards Down the # Line, Words to Wanda, Show of Life, Joy, Liquid Time, Theme From the Bottom, Driver. That’s 5.

Q: How many lobsters do you normally eat in a given year and how many did you consume on the trip? 1. ummm.  More than one.

Q: What was the best part? All of it.

Update on Team:

Nathan: Although he had never ridden a bike Nathan rocked it. I was in front because I had directions and on every hill Nathan would fly by me and say come on Ryles see you at the top! He would motor up with a big grin on his face. I think it was hard to see with that scary beard. He never complained, always helped, smiled a lot and provided STR amongst many other fabulous contributions. Nathan was always up for anything even if it was Rylo napping due to his nasty head cold (it didn’t slow me down I slowed it down!). Nathan is the perfect adventure participant and is considering an Everest Expedition in 2017! I am scared of heights I am out.

Bobby: AKA Badass Jr. Like Nathan he was also up for anything at anytime and never complained once. If I made a wrong turn I would start to cry but Bobby always comforted me and said you don’t cover Pimco anymore you don’t have to be perfect! It was life altering advice. Bobby rode the entire ride on my back tire (not too close I saw some ugliness last year!) and was always smiling and admiring the unbelievable coastline. Bobby also got along with everybody even the much younger crew from STR! Mr. J was also the perfect participant and was a pleasure to ride with. He said yes to everyone of my dumb ideas or listened to my dumb SD stories with enthusiasm proving he drank a lot.

STR: Lead Driver Dom: This kid rocked it. His cool look and beard kept people off guard which was nice as we didn’t want Badass to have to open up a can of whoop asss on the ride. Dom actually seemed to enjoy the trip even though he was just helping old people and Nathan. He joined us for every strategy session/meal/drink/snack/walk etc—We thought they would totally blow us off but it was the opposite both of the STR’s were with us throughout—and for that we are honored. Dom is never ending positive and fun and is now the proud owner of my 3rd bike—F-Tierney 1. Yes I passed the bike onto him. Take care of her Dom! His favorite movie is the Highlander. A sincere thank you.

VP of STR: Maust. How does a rock star get stuck not only on Ryloride2 but also driving the support van? I must be good or the event was. Matt was just like Dom and was with us the entire trip. He also seemed to have fun with us which is cool cause we are all retired bond guys! Maust was a constant source of support and was frequently seen hanging out of the moving highlander video taping us and encouraging us to crush it—which we did. He was a gentlemen to all the fans and Paparazi and never once complained about anything ! Positivity. Next year he promised that Cold War Kids will meet us at the end for an impromptu concert at La Jolla Shores. Yippee!  His favorite movie is the Highlander. A sincere thanks Maust.

Thanks to Bret and Reinecke and well a few words of wisdom and thats it we are done!

-Never leave the group. Don’t vacation in places where you are viewed as prey. Sometimes falling feels like flying, for a little while. Always be yourself, unless you suck. If you aim at nothing Ryles you hit it every time *.

*Butch Harmon–the greatest salesman of all time.

The last batch of pictures. We ate so much food I think we gained 10 pounds.  Most of them speak for themselves and yes that is Nathan at Robertos at 8 am where we met before I headed North–yes I brought home 8 Tacos and one burrito.  Until Next year.

This concludes Ryloride2.

Day 2 synopsis. Lots of pictures. Update on Ryloride2 participants and Support Team Ryloride

Let’s start with a Trey Lyric, shall we–“Gonna take my bike out, take my bike. Gonna ride it slowly gonna ride just how I like”.  That was my original favorite TAB song so go buy it. It will change your life. Here is the link below I couldn’t figure out how to make it a hyperlink my sincere apologies!

http://www.livephish.com/browse/music/0,616/Trey-Anastasio-mp3-flac-download-2-27-2011-The-Riviera-Theatre-Chicago-IL

Day 2 started a bit later (it was planned although we were fairly banged up the next morning I wont lie) but we were on the road by 8:30 am and it was SPECTACULAR out as in clear and sunny and just all fantasticness. We had a ton of fun from Dana Pt all the way down the coast vs the day before where we had a ton of fun EXCEPT for the 10 miles bracketing Long Beach where it was a treacherous gauntlet of Big Rigs road hazards/rabid pit pulls and just all around angry anti-bicycling people.  The ride was just over 60 miles and was truly inspiring. Nathan was heard repeatedly saying: “I wish my wife, who I love so much, was here to enjoy this with me.” Bobby tried to reply but couldn’t.  It was touching Nathan’s honesty was too much and Bobby started sobbing–Yes, he missed his loving wife that much.  Normally I couldn’t compete with such intense male honesty but maybe it was because I am 50 now but I just screamed for all to hear: “Danget everybody we are just a bunch of guys who love our wives so much and we want everybody to know!”  The fans LOVED it and we had many cheers. Sorry I get distracted–so we cruised down the coast thru lots of neat towns and at mile 25 we got to go THRU Pendelton. AND it was Veterans Day to boot. With our American Flag Ryloride Jerseys we were a BIG hit with the Marines and they cheered us aggressively for the 6.5 miles thru the base. That part was cool so lets just put up those pictures now–Nathan you are on the wrong side of the fence!

Cool. For lunch we dined right on the water in Oceanside–I had the new rage-“avocado Toast.

IMG_9252

We dined and biked on thru the part of the world we all know so well–we savored every beach town and I regaled Bobby and Nathan with endless stories of my days in SD. They both seemed enthralled I will say. We did the mandatory stop at the Lodge at Torrey Pines and then cruised past the greatest school in the world, UCSD, and down to LJ Shores where STR met us with much fanfare. The crowds were pretty thick but we made it and then headed back north to L’Auberge in Del Mar–SWEET location.  Here are some pictures of that along with Long Beach!

Before Q&A I wanted to give a shout out to my loving and oh so cute daughters. Here they are as younguns–In the first Kate is scaring all the kids out of the baby pool but it doesn’t phase Sarah and then Sarah scaring all the kids off the beach!

Heading Home

I am packing up and heading back to Moraga but this time I have a 500 mile drive! We had a fabulous 2 days in SD where Bobby J wooed us with his Sinantra like voice as he belted out Classic Show Tunes! Nathan was heard mumbling constantly-” damm its so nice out here I can’t believe I don’t live in the place of Paradise they call Del Mar. It was touching I saw a tear in his young eye. I need to go get stuck in LA traffic so I will wrap this up tomorrow but I wanted to throw up a few pictures to stall you until then! I will also answer a few more questions but the real fantabulous Rylocontent will return tomorrow. Wish me luck on the drive.

Q: Are you happy with how it turned out? Yes.

Q: Would you do it again? Yes

Q: Will you allow others to join-MAYBE

Q: You dodged the insanity question can you please answer the actual question? Well I see Tierney is following along. I stick with my prior statement?

Q: How did the route work out? Fabulously–as Trey would say it was perfectly planned–it was completely insane.

Q: Are there any extra Ryloride2 wearables. Quantities are limited but we can talk.

Q; What next? Chill out man I still have to schlep home what are you doing to entertain us?
